How to Migrate From Constant Contact to beehiiv
Give Your Newsletter an Upgrade
What does it mean when you’re not reaching your biggest goals as fast as you should?
Sometimes, you might just be using the wrong tools. If you’ve been cleaning your floor with a toothbrush, switching to a broom could make all the difference.
It’s the same with email. You can have a breakthrough just by migrating to a platform that’s a better fit for your business.
We’ll show you how you can make this leap in a few short steps.
Can You Transfer Contacts From Constant Contact to beehiiv?
Transferring contacts into beehiiv is super easy. Some people even call it fun!
The very first step is to clean your data by removing inactive contacts – those who rarely open your email.
These contacts are dead weight because they increase your costs and harm your reputation. This can potentially impact the deliverability of your emails, as we’ve mentioned before.
So, how do you clean your data?
The simplest way is to view your campaign reports and remove all bounces and inactive users. We’ll show you how to do this, but if you want a more detailed approach, Constant Contact has a comprehensive process.
Here’s the fast version:
Click “Reporting” at the top of the Constant Contact menu.
Once you’re on the Reporting page, select Emails.
A list of all the campaigns you’ve sent or posted will appear, along with data on how many opens, clicks, bounces, and unsubscribes each campaign generated. Click on any of these data points, and you can see the individuals who carried out that specific action.
Now you know who your bounces and non-readers are, so you can remove them from your list.
Go to Contacts in the main menu. You will see a list of all your contacts, with a checkbox next to their name.
Simply check off the names you want to remove, and click on Actions right above the email list. From the drop-down menu, select either Delete or Remove From List.
If you choose Remove from list, you will still have these contacts in your records, but they will not receive emails that you send to your list. If you choose Delete, you will permanently delete the contacts from your record.
After you’ve cleaned your list, it is time to export.
How Do I Migrate From Constant Contact to beehiiv?
There are two ways to export your contacts into beehiiv.
Go back to your Contact list, and click on the square at the top left of the list. This will automatically check the boxes of everyone on your list. If you prefer, you can go through and check individuals instead.
Next, click Actions, and select “Export” from the dropdown list. A box will open up asking you to check the boxes for the fields you want to save.
Be sure to include any special contact information you may have gleaned, such as phone numbers or a physical address, as well as tags or other info you want to keep. When you are ready, click the “Export” button on the bottom right.
Alternatively, you can click the three dots at the top right of the Contacts page and select Export All Contacts from the dropdown menu.
At this point, Constant Contact will send a CSV file to the email you have on record.
When you receive it, import it into Excel or Google Sheets. You want to make sure all the columns and fields are filled properly. This extra step can save you from losing valuable contacts and spare you hours of frustration later on.
Sometimes a name can end up in the email column, for example. Sometimes you need to replace a dot with a dash, or manually relocate part of a physical address. A quick scan of your data gives you a chance to catch these issues and fix them with a simple cut and paste.
When you’re happy with the accuracy of your data, export it again as a new CSV file. It’s not a bad idea to save it to your desktop before you move to beehiiv. You can easily find the file there, and delete it when you’re done migrating.
Next, go to your dashboard in beehiiv. Under Audience, select “Subscribers.”
You’ll see a big button that says “Import Subscribers.” Click on it, and look for the button that says, “Start New Import.” You know where to click.
At this point, you could copy and paste emails if you wanted to. But you’ve already got a CSV, which is much faster if you have more than just a few people on your list.
So go ahead and check the box for “Upload a CSV file,” click “Begin Import,” and watch your list magically grow before your very eyes!
Which Is Easier To Use Constant Contact or beehiiv?
We challenge you to google “Constant Contact vs. beehiiv” and find a comparative review that mentions them both. The two platforms are rarely mentioned together, because they are so different.
That said, beehiiv was designed for lean creators and entrepreneurs who don’t have the time (or the interest) to learn a lot of tech skills just to get a newsletter off the ground.
We’ve created easy-to-use tools to launch and grow, in the words of one reviewer, “with little to no friction.”
Which Is Cheaper beehiiv or Constant Contact?
It’s hard to make an apple-to-oranges comparison, but we’ll try. Two factors determine the price of most email service providers: the number of contacts and the services offered.
Constant Contact charges $9.99/ month for their “Core” service, which doesn’t include a lot of their advanced tools. The price goes up rapidly once you have more than 500 contacts. They also charge by the number of emails sent.
In contrast, beehiiv’s “Launch” service starts free, and the first pricing tier is at 5,000 contacts. This basic service gives you access to analytics, web hosting with SEO, pop-ups advanced email capture, and a bunch of other tools designed to make newsletters successful. And a major plus–there’s no limit to the number of times you can send.
Rather than penalizing you for growth, you can choose between a Launch, Grow, or Scale service to maximize your return on investment.
Is Constant Contact cheaper than beehiiv? Only if you have a small list, you want the bare essentials, and you’re not planning to grow.
Why Is beehiiv Better Than Constant Contact?
Constant Contact is good for a few specific things.
For example, it’s great for event management. If you do a lot of webinars or hold a lot of sales and other events, Constant Contact will help. It plays well with most social media and integrates easily with shopping platforms such as Etsy, Shopify, and WooCommerce.
But if you’re a creator and you win or lose by the number of people who read your content, beehiiv was built for you. We were founded by the same people who created Morning Brew, and everything we do is meant to help the lean creator get started and grow quickly.
If you’re ready to have the tools you need and grow your newsletter–and probably get more bang for your buck than Constant Contact can deliver–it’s time to migrate your contacts and start your beehiiv newsletter.
