19 of the Most Useful Marketing Tools for 2024
How to Pick the Right Tools for Your Business
Table of Contents
The Importance of Choosing the Right Tools
Have you ever assembled a piece of furniture? How’d it go?
My wife and I moved into a new home in early 2023. We had the usual – boxes, totes, bins, and furniture. To save space in the moving trailer, we disassembled our dining table. It’s a pedestal table with four bolts that attach the top to the base. Easy enough.
Securing the bolts requires an Allen wrench— which is where the problem comes in: I didn’t keep track of the wrench before loading the table. So, instead of taking five minutes to attach a few bolts, I spent an hour looking for the right tool.
“Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I’ll spend the first four sharpening the axe.” - Abraham Lincoln
In the United States alone, about 4.4 million businesses are started each year. So, if you want your brand to stand out in 2024, using the right marketing tools for startups is more important than ever.
What is the best marketing strategy for startups?
What tools do you use in marketing?
How do I market my startup idea?
In this article, I’ll share 19 effective marketing tools for scaling your startup. I’ll include the perks of each, who the tool is best for, and a few reviews.
Disclaimer: Everyone’s toolbox is different. What works for me might not be enough for your business, or may be too robust. Here’s what I’m personally using for my copywriting clients.
Free vs. Paid Marketing Tools
Growing a business usually isn’t cheap. And if you’re not seeing immediate results from your marketing efforts, spending more money on tools can be painful.
If that’s where you find yourself, you’re in luck. A lot of the tools mentioned below have a free option (or at least low cost), so you’ll get a return on your “investment” before committing. Below each listing, I’ll add a description for free pricing tiers whenever they’re available.
With that said, let’s see what’s in our marketing toolbox for 2024.
Why Trust Me? I’m an efficiency and growth addict. When I’m not sending emails or writing content, I’m researching ways to be more productive. Let’s just say, leaving this list of marketing tools at 19 wasn’t easy.
Content Creation and Management
Whether you’re sending a weekly newsletter or selling products, creating valuable content is essential for growth. Here are a few tools to make sure your content stands out in 2024.
Graphic Design for Non-Designers
I’m not a designer. On my best days, I can piece together a landing page or modify a template without ruining it – but that’s about as far as my design skills go. Thankfully, there are a few tools on the market that make designing easy(er).
With more than 135 million monthly users in 2023, I don’t think Canva needs much of an introduction. Canva is awesome for designing ads, landing page mockups, logos, and anything else your startup needs.
Why use it:
The online screen recorder is perfect for sharing and recording your screen, and videos are automatically uploaded to your Canva account. You can trim, crop, and add designs without having to export and import your video into another program.
For non-designers, the Color Palette Generator makes color-matching easy. Upload a photo and Canva will give you the hex code for color hues found within.
The Template Directory is packed with free, customizable templates you can use in your next design.
Who it’s for:
Anyone looking for a simple way to create eye-catching designs. I’m not a designer by any means, and I’ve used Canva to create a lot of images and markups for my clients.
Pricing:
Canva Free: Canva’s free tier is more than enough for most of its target audience. You’ll get access to their design editor, 5GB of storage, and more than three million stock photos and graphics.
Canva Pro ($119.99/year): If you’re looking at using Canva long-term and need more premium features than the free tier has to offer, Canva Pro is the way to go. It comes with upgraded versions of everything in the free tier, plus brand kits, more AI tools, and 24/7 support.
Reviews:
“The overall experience is very good and worth every penny paid. Many features are offered in the pro plan and leave nothing to be desired compared to tools that perform the same task, being much more expensive.” - Ricardo S.
“It has been of great value for the art I create and even in the free version you can do incredible work.” - Jonas D.
“This is a key tool for my creative team. Social media, flyers, presentations, investor pitches, sales pitches… anything and everything goes through Canva.” - Elsa B.
Inspiration From Existing Content
It’s been said that good artists copy, and great artists steal.
With the number of emails being sent every day and web pages being created (over 252,000), coming up with an entirely original idea isn’t easy. So, instead of banging your head against the monitor while you try and create something from thin air, why not get inspiration from what’s already working?
I browse through Really Good Emails at least once a week. For $9/month, you’ll get access to more than ten thousand emails sent by successful companies. I can’t count the number of times I’ve stumbled upon an email here that makes a lightbulb go off in my head.
Why use it:
The ability to collect and share emails means no more having to gather everything in a Gmail swipe account. You can create and filter collections to locate what you need easily.
Email uploading allows you to curate collections based on personal emails that you’d like to save.
Who it’s for:
Anyone interested in seeing what marketing emails are working without having to sign up to multiple lists.
Pricing:
Free plan: Good for those looking to occasionally browse through emails listed on Really Good Emails. Limited to three collections.
Pro plan ($9/month): The best all-around choice for anyone using this website regularly. Includes unlimited collections, sorting and filtering, and a Chrome extension to upload personal emails.
Reviews:
“Use it every time I need to come up with brief copy of any topic or format, not just for email inspo.” - Jeorge
“Having a live code view and ability to create collections takes this to the next level. This is an indispensable tool for email/all marketers looking for inspiration.” - Jorge S.
This is a great alternative (or complement) to Really Good Emails. No fuss or frills here, either. Good Email Copy is completely free and simple to use.
Why use it:
Good Email Copy features a ton of emails from well-known companies including Slack, Trello, Zendesk, Dropbox, and Figma.
Who it’s for:
Anyone looking for email or newsletter inspiration.
Pricing:
Free. No paid options are available.
Reviews:
“Really helpful if you are stuck for simple email copy (like welcome emails). Some really quirky ones on there from great companies.” - Adam C.
“This is such a great reference! Thanks for putting this together - sharing with our team now!” - Lucia C.
AI Writers and Editors
I see a lot of AI-generated content today. LinkedIn is littered with it. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t have its uses, though. In its current state, I think AI is an awesome tool for generating ideas, structuring layouts, and building rough drafts. And, some AI tools do a great job of detecting AI-written text as well.
Content at Scale is an easy way to generate long-form content in a short amount of time. Give it a keyword (or notes from a document), hit generate, and it’ll write a blog post that usually clocks in at around three thousand words.
Disclaimer: Once you’ve created an article, you’ll probably want to tweak and edit it for readability and SEO.
Why use it:
Content at Scale can generate a three thousand-word article in less than 10 minutes. That same article might take the average writer multiple days to complete.
It also includes a free AI detector (capped at 2,500 words) that I use religiously. Even if you write everything from the top of your head, an AI detector can still help with final edits.
Who it’s for:
The paid tiers aren’t cheap, but I think everyone (including marketers, business owners, and content creators) can and should use free features like the AI detector.
Pricing:
Generative AI tier ($39/month): Includes one user seat, the prompt library, 25,000 undetectable rewrites, and more.
Reviews:
“Before, I was writing my own content. I did all the ideating, the keyword research, the writing, the editing, and publishing myself. Now all of that takes me 2 hours. And the more I use the tool the better I get at using the features.” - Nicole K.
“The long form content that we have published from Content at Scale has been very good for our SEO. In a matter of months, our domain authority jumped 10 points. Several of our articles ranked on the first page of Google within a week or two.” - Jacki A.
Ensuring Written Content is Top-Tier
Creating engaging content regularly is time-consuming, and – regardless of how good of a writer you are – things get missed. Sloppy sentences, missed words, and typos aren’t a big deal if they’re caught. But they’re not always easy to catch when you’ve been staring at the same newsletter for four hours.
Here are a couple of tools to help you keep your content at its peak.
I’m a little embarrassed admitting it wasn’t until recently that I started using Grammarly. I’ve been writing for a long time and I figured it would only complicate things. I was wrong.
At its core, Grammarly is an all-in-one writing assistant. It comes in a desktop version or a browser extension (which I recommend). It doesn’t only correct typos or misspelled words, either. As an example: Grammarly has eight suggestions for the article I’m writing (if you don’t count the 32 premium suggestions).
Disclaimer: Grammarly is great, but it’s not perfect – and it isn’t human. You might want to ignore suggestions affecting phrasing or spelling that you think your audience would enjoy as-is.
Why use it:
The free tier is probably more than enough for most writers. You’ll get spelling corrections, punctuation suggestions, and alternate words to use. And, occasionally, Grammarly will include a free premium suggestion to entice you to upgrade.
The Chrome extension makes using Grammarly effortless. It’s always open on the side of my screen when I’m in Google Docs, and it’ll pop up in most text boxes, too.
Who it’s for:
Everyone who writes regularly. I can’t think of a reason to avoid using Grammarly and plenty of pros to make it worth trying.
Pricing:
Free tier: Includes the Chrome and desktop writing assistants.
Premium tier ($12/month): Includes the free tier, plus the ability to rewrite full sentences and generate text with 1,000 AI prompts.
Reviews:
“I use Grammarly for checking and improving upon my research writing. Grammarly has helped to correct most of the errors and added a sense of variety to my writing.” - Haocheng L.
“Grammarly has literally changed everything, especially for someone like myself who prefers to always write things as concisely and clearly as possible.” - Scott F.
Run-on sentences and complex vocabulary are okay in certain situations. They don’t help the readability of content, though. And in a marketing world where readers receive hundreds of emails a day, readability is essential for standing out.
Why use it:
Hemingway is easy to use and to navigate. Suggestions are color-coded, so you’ll know when a sentence is too long vs. when a word should be changed.
Like Grammarly, the free version of Hemingway is great.
Who it’s for:
Anyone looking to simplify their writing, or to see if they can improve readability.
Pricing:
Free tier: Great for using on a browser. I’ll often visit the Hemingway website, input a block of text, and see if I should change anything.
Desktop client ($19.99): The desktop version is best if you plan on writing in areas without an internet connection. It’s a one-time fee of $19.99, so it’s a worthy investment if you use Hemingway regularly.
Reviews:
“The Hemingway Editor makes it easy to tailor written content for my intended audience. I love being able to see the readability of what I’m writing based on grade level.” - Anna A.
“I love the ability to switch from writing to editing mode, so you can write clean and then turn on the edits/suggestions. Built-in word counter, time to read, and other basic things are all there and helpful as well.” - Ian M.
If you’re trying to grow a startup in 2024 without using social media, you’re missing out on something that can make your life much easier. That being said, managing your X (Formerly Twitter), Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok accounts is time-consuming and can be confusing.
That’s where social media marketing tools come in.
Hootsuite is an all-in-one social media management tool. It’s perfect for gathering all your social media networks into a single dashboard where you can schedule, post, and view analytics.
Why use it:
Everything is managed from an easy-to-use dashboard, so there’s no fuss when dealing with multiple social media accounts.
Hootsuite comes with some pretty powerful scheduling and analytics tools that can save creators a lot of time.
Who it’s for:
Anyone looking to grow their business through social media. Hootsuite offers plans for individuals, small teams, and enterprise-level businesses.
Pricing:
Professional tier ($99/month): Includes unlimited post scheduling for 1 user and up to 10 social media accounts.
Team tier ($249/month): Unlimited posting for 3 users and up to 20 social media accounts. It also adds team roles and permissions.
Reviews:
“The ease of use is a massive plus for Hootsuite, both in analytics report generation (customized reports too!) and in multi-account management and scheduling. It’s by far the most intuitive program I have used under this toolset.” - Thomas M.
“Hootsuite has always been my go-to for businesses getting off the ground or those that are on a low budget. They offer such great and essential features in an easy-to-use platform.” - Joanmarie C.

Klaviyo is an email and SMS marketing platform that makes audience segmentation and automation easy. If your business sells a product or service, it’s a great tool for creating and sending hyper-personalized marketing campaigns.

Mapping the Customer Journey
If you don’t know what your audience wants, it’s hard to give them a good product. Mapping the customer journey through funnels is an important step in growing your brand and sending emails that people will want to read.
Effective funnels are an essential part of digital marketing, and mapping out your funnel can be a major headache without the right tool.
Funnelytics lets you easily visualize your customer journeys, so you can see what’s working and what needs a little optimization.
Why use it:
Funnelytics is heavy on visuals, so it’s easy to explain complex data to your clients (or to gather data for your own research).
The free-forever plan was discontinued in December of 2023, but you can still try Funnelytics with a 14-day free trial. It’s enough to see if investing in a paid plan would be worth it.
Who it’s for:
Creators and business owners who are interested in tracking their customer journeys and visualizing the data.
Pricing:
Performance Lite ($199/month): For a starter plan, Performance Lite isn’t cheap. It comes with a lot of features though, including up to 25,000 people tracked per month, customer journey visualizations, on-demand training, and analytics.
Reviews:
“If you want to know where people are coming from and where they are dropping off in your funnel or landing page, this is awesome software that will give you all the actionable data you need. It makes it easy to map out a funnel (including email sequences and ads) in a visual way - which can be very helpful.” - Andrew M.
“What I have loved the most about this platform is its incredible ability to simplify and visualize the customer journey in a powerful way. It's like having a treasure map for my online business!” - Jose C.
SEO and Online Visibility
To grow a startup in 2024, your audience needs to know who you are. And they can’t know who you are if your website is buried 12 pages down in Google’s search results. That’s where SEO and online visibility come into play. Here are two tools that were built specifically for marketing through SEO.
Disclaimer: As with a few of my other recommendations in this post, you don’t need both of these tools to grow your startup. Make use of the one that best suits your needs.
There are plenty of reasons why Ahrefs has been a staple in the marketing world since its inception. It’s a powerful SEO tool for keyword research and competitor analysis, and its backlink database is massive.
Why use it:
Ahrefs comes with plenty of free tools and resources for learning more about effective SEO strategies.
The team at Ahrefs is constantly improving their algorithms while keeping up with the latest SEO trends.

“I can do pretty much anything I need to do in Ahrefs when it comes to SEO. And if you miss something, the team will be eager to see if it can be implemented. Also, the support is great, usually quite quick in responding and very friendly too.” - Nathan V.
If Ahrefs is a powerful SEO tool, I think SEMrush would be the whole toolbox. You can use SEMrush one day for keyword and competitor research and jump to PPC and social media marketing the next.
Because of this, SEMrush’s paid tiers come at a pretty penny – but they have a lot of features that may allow you to drop other marketing tools altogether.
Why use it:
SEMrush has a lot of features for anyone involved in SEO or marketing. Local SEO, content creation, PPC ads, and social media management are just a few perks that come with this tool.

Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO)
Recognizing what is and isn’t working for customers who interact with your business is essential in knowing what to optimize. CRO tools help identify areas for improvement, so you can confidently make changes that’ll grow your brand.

Why use it:
Like many of my favorite tools on this list, Hotjar is simple. It’s easy to set up and configure, while at the same time coming equipped with more features than I could ever need.

Collaborative Tools
As your startup grows, efficient collaboration becomes much more important. It’s easy to manage small projects when you only have one or two; but once you start taking on more (or more complicated) work, it can quickly get out of hand.

Communication Tools
I’ve been working with virtual clients for more than a decade, and I can’t imagine my life without good communication. Sure, email is effective and phone calls have their place. But when you work with multiple people across a few different companies, finding an efficient way to communicate is essential.
Slack is one of the most popular ways to communicate with a team in 2024. It’s easy to add coworkers to a workspace and I prefer day-to-day business discussions in Slack over email any day.

I don’t think much has to be said about Google Meet in 2024. It remains one of the most used video conferencing tools on the market for good reason.
Why use it:
The video quality is great, especially for being completely free.
Integrating with Google Hangouts and Gmail is easy. Calendar invitations are simple and quick, too.

Integrating Marketing Tools for a Successful Startup
That’s my marketing tools list for 2024 (for now). What are you going to put in your toolbox?
Whatever you choose, remember:
Business needs change over time and some of your marketing tools should change, too.
What works for me (or anyone else) might not work for you. When you can, test out the free tiers of any tools before committing to paid plans.
One of the most effective ways to grow a startup is by creating engaging content (and remember, email marketing generated more than 10 billion dollars in sales in 2023). I don’t know about you, but I’d love a small percentage of that in 2024.
