As a coach, I just passed the $100,000 mark in my business (in my first 14 months).
As an email marketer, I’ve generated over $1 million in revenue for my clients.
Trust me when I say this…
There’s never been a better time to build up a coaching business (while leveraging the power of email).
If you’re a coach and you’re looking for ways to tap into new revenue, sign clients on autopilot and get more time back. Then, keep reading.
In this guide, I’ll break down three different email marketing strategies I’ve tested in my own copywriting coaching business in 2025 that have helped me hit six figures in just over a year.
Take some notes, apply these strategies to your coaching business, and watch as your revenue grows.
Ready?
Let’s dive in.
Before we dive in, let me quickly introduce myself (and give you an overview of how my coaching business operates).
My name is Brandon Storey.
For the past 6 years, I’ve been a freelance copywriter and marketer (email marketing is my specialty). I’ve managed client email lists of 30,000 to 100,000+ subscribers.
In 2024, I started a brand new coaching business from scratch.
My niche is teaching people how to become freelance copywriters.
I help people learn how to write copy, land clients, and build their business up to $5,000-$10,000 per month from their laptops.
Here’s a quick breakdown of my audience and offers (as of April 2025):
9,000+ followers on social media (mainly X/Twitter and YouTube)
3,200+ subscribers on my email list
3 main coaching offers: 1:1 coaching, group coaching, and a self-paced course
With a relatively small audience (under 10,000 followers), I’ve been able to land over 50+ coaching clients and 195 course students.
Overall, I’ve generated over $100,000+ in revenue so far — in just the first year alone.
If you’re struggling to consistently sign clients in your coaching business or if you’ve hit a ceiling that you can’t seem to break through, don’t worry.
I have three proven email marketing strategies you can apply to your coaching business (even if you’re clueless about email).
Why should you focus on email marketing as a coach?
Let’s look at the data. Here are five juicy stats:
The average return on investment (ROI) of email is 36:1 (higher than social media, SEO, and paid ads).
The average business generates an additional 20% revenue when they introduce email marketing.
99% of email users check their inboxes daily.
There are over 4.37 billion email users worldwide (more than 50% of the world’s population), and this is expected to grow to 4.89 billion by 2027.
One of the biggest misconceptions is that email is dying out, yet email users are expected to grow to 4.89 billion by 2027.
Plus, while most people think young people aren’t reading emails, the data proves otherwise. In fact, Gen Zs check email more than Millennials and Gen X.
Beyond the numbers, email is the only channel you truly own.
The vast majority of coaches use social media to attract leads, but you can be kicked off, suspended, or shadow banned from social platforms at any time. It happens all the time!
What would happen if you woke up tomorrow and your Instagram or YouTube account was gone?
Not only that, but email is a direct line to reach your audience.
When you post on social media, only a small percentage of your audience might see it. Social algorithms change constantly and prevent you from reaching your people.
But with email, when you hit send, it goes directly into your audience’s email inboxes, so you can nurture that relationship (which makes it easier to sign more clients).
Coaches who don’t use email are missing out on a 36:1 ROI, a 20% increase in revenue, and a direct line to their audience. Don’t be one of them!
Instead, take a look at the three simple email marketing strategies I’ve tested below that have helped me build a six-figure coaching business in one year.
First things first, if the only people on your email list are your mom and best friend, you’ve got some work to do.
You could write the greatest emails in the world; but if no one is reading them, what good is that?
Step one is to start growing your list.
Because I understand the power of email, I didn’t waste time as a new coach. I launched my email newsletter, Storey Time, just one week after I started posting on social media, and I immediately started growing my email list.
I have plenty of advice for growing your email list quickly (I’ll put a few tips below). But before we dive into all the tactics, there’s one thing that’s worked better than any other list growth strategy:
Lead magnets.
A lead magnet is something you give people for free in exchange for their email address.
Here are some examples:
Fee guide
Ebook
Mini course
Video
Masterclass
Training
Checklist
Template
Free consultation call
Free audit
Giveaways
Discount code
Limited time offer
The purpose of a lead magnet is to be a magnet that attracts leads.
You know your audience. You know your coaching clients. What would incentivize them to hand over their email address? What would be so valuable to them that entering their email is almost automatic?
Just remember, you don’t want to hold back with your lead magnet. You need to create or offer something so valuable that people would even pay money for it (but you’re not going to ask for money, you’re going to simply ask for their email address to join your email list).
Not only will a great lead magnet help you grow your email list, but when done right, your lead magnet can be one of your greatest salesmen to automatically convert those leads into coaching clients.
The goal is to create something so good that it leaves your readers wanting more (this is key to converting leads into coaching clients).
I won’t go in-depth about how to create a lead magnet here, but I’ll give you this one tip about the content in your lead magnet: Always remember to place a call to action (CTA) at the end of your lead magnet (this works best with an informational lead magnet like an ebook, free course, video, checklist, template, etc).
You want to pitch your coaching to your new leads at the end. I’ve landed dozens of clients over the past year from this one thing. They just consumed something (hopefully) super valuable from you. They got a taste of what it’s like to work with you.
A percentage of people will want more help. Don’t deprive them of that by leaving out a call to action. Always make the pitch!
Here are a few other things I did to grow to 3,200+ subscribers in just over 1 year:
Announced to my social media audience when I launched my email list
DMd several of my closest followers, friends, and others in my network when I went live
Placed my email signup landing page link in my bio
Regularly added a CTA to my signup landing page at the end of my social media posts
Launched not one, but five different lead magnets to my email list
Signed up for beehiiv Boosts (easiest paid acquisition channel)
Built and optimized my email signup landing page
Really focused on the quality of my newsletter content (to prevent subscriber churn)
Just remember, you don’t need a massive list to make a six or seven-figure income as a coach. I was able to generate $100,000+ from only 3,000 people.
You can’t be passive with your list growth. Nobody’s going to grow it for you.
You need to shamelessly promote your email list to your audience. If you truly believe your coaching helps people, then give people the opportunity to take one step closer via email!
Let’s talk about how to get your time back (and convert leads on autopilot) with automations.
But, first, want to know one of the main problems new coaches face as they’re trying to scale? They spend way too much time trying to twist cold leads’ arms with high pressure sales calls to sign them as coaching clients.
Most coaches are battling uphill to convince strangers to spend $1,000+ on programs when these leads barely know the coach.
And worst of all, they’re spending hours and hours every week hopping on calls and falling short.
The problem isn’t your sales skills. It’s your marketing (or lack thereof).
When I first started coaching people, I was endlessly promoting free 15-minute consultation calls to sign coaching clients.
Even though the calls were only 15-minutes long, I’d take 6-12 of these per week, they would often go for 30+ minutes, and my close rate wasn’t strong.
Sure, I got some clients. But this took up dozens of hours each week, so I stopped.
At one point, I turned off the 15-minute free consultation; and, instead, I decided to lean into my email marketing strategy to give me my time back.
Remember how we just covered how you can convert people automatically with lead magnets and by placing a CTA at the end of your emails and posts? Well, there’s another way you can tap into automated sales…
Here’s a key strategy you need to implement to help you turn leads into clients on repeat:
Automations.
Every time I create a lead magnet, I create an email automation in beehiiv to nurture the people who download the lead magnet.
The moment someone enters their email to grab a lead magnet of mine, they’re immediately entered into an email automation.
Once they enter the automation, they’ll immediately get a reminder from me via email to go consume the lead magnet. That’s the first goal. Remember, if they don’t spend their time on your free product, they’re probably not going to spend their money on your paid coaching.
Next, I’ll introduce another call to action to my coaching programs in that email automation. The idea is to keep asking your audience to take one step further.
Some people will convert into clients right there. Some will need a few touchpoints (the average customer in the world requires about eight marketing touchpoints before buying something from a business).
The second automation I set up is a welcome email automation, so this email goes out to every new subscriber, whether they downloaded a lead magnet or not.
Your welcome email is the most important email you’ll ever send (yet most coaches don’t have one set up!)
The welcome email has an average open rate of 83.63%. To put this in perspective, the average open rate of any email is about 20%. That means you have a small window of opportunity to make a good first impression and capitalize on the hottest leads who just entered your marketing funnel.
Remember to introduce yourself and your brand. Tell how you help people and why you’re an authority in the space and get people excited about your next email.
The third main automation you need to set up is a “list-cleaning” automation. This one isn’t a high client converter, but it is crucial to get the most out of your email marketing.
A list-cleaning automation removes inactive subscribers from your list. These are people who haven’t opened or clicked an email in awhile.
You need to set this up because if you are sending emails to people who don’t engage with your emails, it could make all of your emails land in people’s spam folders. That’s right – even the people who want your emails.
With my list-cleaning automation in beehiiv, people will enter automatically if they haven’t opened or clicked an email in 90 days.
Then, I send them two emails to give them one last chance to stay on my list. I, then, revive about 25% of people who enter this automation.
The goal with this email automation is to either reactivate unengaged subscribers or remove them. That way, you keep your list “healthy,” so you’re only sending emails to people who actually open, read, and click on them.
What is the third strategy I introduced to help me hit $100,000+ in my coaching business in one year?
I switched from a weekly to a daily newsletter.
Now, this is one strategy I don’t recommend you start from day one unless you’re truly committed.
For most people, I recommend switching to a daily newsletter once you’ve been faithfully sending emails one to two times per week for at least one month.
The reason is because you want to be consistent with whatever you do. You don’t want to send 2 emails per month one month and then 50 emails the next month and then back to 2.
Your audience should know how often you send right from your email signup page and welcome email. Set the expectation upfront.
But, overall, if you choose to send emails daily, you have a higher income potential than if you send weekly.
The case for daily emails is simple: The coach who talks to their audience the most has the best relationship with them, and the coach who has the best relationship with their audience signs the most clients.
Marketing is all about attention.
Remember what I mentioned above about the average person needing eight touchpoints to become a customer? Someone who sends a daily email connects with their subscriber 7x more than a weekly sender.
If you want to grow your coaching business, sign clients on autopilot, and get more time back in your day, you need to tap into the power of email marketing.
With an average return on investment (ROI) of 36:1 (higher than any other marketing channel), there’s no better way to consistently turn leads into high-ticket clients.
The question is, what email platform should you use to get started?
Well, I’ve been doing email marketing for six years.
I’ve used several platforms including top players like Kit, Klaviyo, Drip, Kajabi, and Mailchimp, but there’s one platform that stands above the rest:
beehiiv.
I’ve never used an email software that simplifies email marketing better than beehiiv.
When you’re new to the email game, you can easily get lost and confused within the different tech, but beehiiv makes sending emails easy for coaches.
beehiiv’s interface is unparalleled. It’s simple, clean, and even a beginner can navigate it with confidence.
With beehiiv, sending your first email is as easy as 1-2-3. Plus, the email editor gives you the flexibility and creativity to create robust and stunning emails if you want.
To double down on your marketing, beehiiv even gives you a free website to act as a home base for your coaching business.
Every time you send an email, you can simultaneously post it as a blog post on your beehiiv website (helping you reach more people since your emails live on forever).
Plus, beehiiv lives and breathes list growth. No email software on Earth has as many native growth features as beehiiv. You have free recommendations, paid acquisition via Boosts, mid-content email popups forms, custom landing pages for lead magnets, and even a native referral program.
My coaching business wouldn’t be the same without beehiiv. I leveraged it from day one, and it’s played a key role in helping me build a six-figure business in just over a year as a brand new coach.
